CAHPERD STANDING COMMITTEES

LEGISLATION COMMITTEE

WHO?

Members of the Legislation Committee shall be recommended by the Legislation Chair, appointed by the President  and approved by the Board of Directors and shall consist of the Chair (three-year term); and six persons representing the various disciplines from the membership at large (three-year terms, coordinated so only two terms of office expire in a given year.  The Executive Director (Quentin Christian) and the Legislative Advocate of the Association (Kathy Lynch) shall serve as ex-officio non-voting members of the Committee.  Members may be appointed to more than one three-year term.

WHAT?

  • Assist the President in the development and initiation of legislation that will promote the objectives of the California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.

  • Inform members of the Association, through members of the House of Delegates, by email, mail, or phone calls, of pending legislation that will affect health, physical education, athletics, recreation, dance or other area of interest in California.

  • Cooperate with legislative committees of other professional associations in promoting legislation consistent with the purposes of the Association.

  • Assist the Association in determining and expressing its position regarding pending legislation.

  • Coordinate, interpret, and expedite all legislative activities of the Association.

  • Organize membership, when necessary, to influence lawmakers on positions important to the fields of health, physical education, athletics, recreation, dance or other area of interest.

  • Keep the membership informed of the addresses and names of senators, assembly members and other people affecting legislative action.

WHEN?

The Legislation Committee shall meet immediately prior to all regularly scheduled meetings of the Cabinet and at the Annual State Conference.

COMPARISON WITH THE CURRENT STRUCTURE:

Only change is to meet in conjunction with the Cabinet, rather than in conjunction with the House of Delegates.
