SACRAMENTO, CA - Former Sacramento Monarchs star Ruthie
Bolton says growing up with 19 siblings always involved
some type of physical activity.
That is what partly made her the great athlete she
is today. Bolton, who appeared on Live_Online Thursday,
will be one of the keynote speakers at the California
Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance conference. (CAHPERD). The event will be
held March 19-22 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.
CAHPERD's Executive Director, Drisha Leggitt, says
28 to 33 percent of California kids are severely overweight
or obese and of those, 75 percent will grow into obese
adults. That is unless something is done now.
CAHPERD was formed in 1930 to promote the development
and implementation of school, community and statewide
programs of health, physical education, recreation
and dance in California.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, physical
education programs can, among other things, reinforce
knowledge learned in other subject areas such as science,
math and social studies.
Such programs help develop motor skills that allow
for safe, successful and satisfying participation in
physical activities.
