Kathleen
Cordes
President-Elect (2009-2010)
Kathleen Cordes is President-Elect for CAHPERD and has
served our organization as vice president of GWS, vice
president for Recreation, vice president of the Foundation
Board of Trustees, Publications Chair, Section Chair,
the Legislation Committee, and in various offices at the
district and unit level. She has served as vice
president of Recreation and Intramurals for AAHPERD's
Southern District and on the Publications/Editorial Committee
for AAHPERD. In her capacity as AAHPERD's interim
executive director for the American Association for Leisure
and Recreation (AALR), Cordes served on the executive
board for AAHPERD and represented them on the White House
Green Ribbon Panel.
Cordes is author of America's Millennium Trails, an official project of the White
House Millennium Council (AAHPERD); America's National Historic Trails and America's
National Scenic Trails (both University of Oklahoma Press). Her college
textbooks include Applications in Recreation and Leisure (McGraw-Hill, including
Chinese translation), Outdoor Recreation Encrichment for a Lifetime (Sagamore),
and Parks, Recreation, and Leisure Service Management (Eddie Bowers).
The recipient of AALR's Outstanding Achievement Award and CAHPERD's Past President's
Award of Merit was presented with both organization's Distinguished Serivice
to Leisure and Recreation awards. She is an elected Fellow in the American
Leisure Academy and is listed in Who's Who of American Women (2007, 2008), Who's
Who Among America's Teachers (2008), Who's Who in America (2008, 2009), and Who's
Who in the World (2009). Cordes, who is professor emeritus and served as
Honors Director and Department Chair at Miramar College; department chair at
Whittier College; Athletic Director at Saint Mary's College; the first woman
to coach a varsity sport at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana; and as visiting
professor at the University of Zulia and the University of the Andes in Venezuela,
presents papers at the state, national, and international levels. Her favorite
topics include sports history, sport ethics, the history of womens' sports, American
Indian dance and ceremonials, curriculum and interdisciplinarity, outdoor recreation,
America's trails, and tennis - the sport Cordes lettered in at Indiana University.
